Research
Research about our project has been carried out by Julie De Simone in conjunction with Glasgow Caledonian University, under the supervision of Professor Raymond MacDonald, and was funded by Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board. There have been two areas of research: firstly to investigate the effects a structured music programme has on individuals with dementia. This research has shown an improvement in mood, communication and cognitive functioning in those taking part in the music workshops. The second study investigated the subjective experience of adult service users involved in structured music activities. This research has shown a number of benefits including reduced isolation, improved self esteem, self confidence and self image, as well as the importance of musical identity and family and reminiscence.
