Klapprad
Klapprad is a Dutch word for 'clap bike'. It is usually used to refer to the U framed folder, sold mail order by the hundreds of thousands in the 1970s and '80s.
These bikes are very poor, and we don't sell them.
This is a Peugeot version, just before we stripped it for bits. The man standing behind is Bill Slimmond, who works for the Boomerang woodworking project a few doors along. He's collecting old rims to use to make planters, and is about to get the rims from this machine.
But it looks cute, surely it can't be that bad?
It is.
This is the front brake. Sidepull brakes with this much drop never work very well, and this one is starting to bend. The rims are steel, so if it rains it won't stop.
This is the bottom bracket, about the least glamourous part of the bike, but vital, unlike the tartan rack top bag. This is a Thompson 2 piece bottom bracket, which is a pain to adjust properly and very hard to get spares for.
