Four speed

There are a few four speed hub gears. Only the Shimano is still in production.

Sturmey used to make three different ones in close, medium and wide ratios. We still have some bits for the wide version.

Now comes the arcane technical bit: to make a four speed hub gear usually involves two epicyclics inside the hub, just like a five speed. It's a small step in terms of complication and manufacturing to go from four to five speeds, so this step is made by most hub makers today.
