Dynamo
Modern hub dynamos are great. LED lamps are fantastic. Combine the two and your bike can have bright, reliable, low maintenance lights that let you see and be seen.
This is a Busch und Muller light fitted to the front of Ruby the red trike. Of note is the dipping lever sticking out the back of the lamp. These lights are so bright they dazzle car drivers, so Neil in Maryhill invented this simple dipping device made from an old brake lever (a DiaCompe SS5).
These lights aren't cheap, but they have a estimated life of 100,000 hours, so in the long run they are very cheap.
To fit these to your bike will cost about £300-350. We don't sell the SON hub dynamo, but if you buy it from somewhere else (like Longstaff Cycles) we will be happy to build it up into a wheel and do the rest of the work.
The old style tyre driven (bottle) dynamos are good when they work, but hard to keep working with all the water and vibration they suffer. If you want one we have lots cheap, but they are so fiddly to fit and maintain it's best if you take a set away and fit it yourself so you understand it and can repair it at the roadside.
The original Sturmey Archer hub dynamo doesn't produce much power by modern standards. They can be connected to modern LED lights, but how long such a setup will last is unknown.
