Broken rim

This is a rim broken into 5 pieces. One of our regulars, Kev, came in and said, "my back hub is loose". A quick inspection revealed this. The bike was still rideable.

This kind of failure is rare. Usually rims wear out or buckle long before this happens, or one crack will be noticed when the tyre is changed, but Kevs bike is a hub braked 3 speed roadster fitted with the very durable Marathon Plus tyres. Marathon Plus tyres are so thick that they almost never puncture and take years to wear out.
